A Competition Calling for Proposals from 12 Universities in 9 Countries Worldwide for Sustainable Construction Based on the Theme of “Productive Garden — A Space for Enjoying Hokkaido with All Five Senses”

The LIXIL JS Foundation (located in Koto-ku, Tokyo; president: Yoichiro Ushioda), which facilitates surveys and research related to the housing and building materials industry as well as supporting the development of human resources, decided upon the following three universities to proceed to the Open Final Screening from the 12 universities in 9 countries after the stringent documentary examination by the jury in the 4th LIXIL International University Architectural Competition held for the purpose of seeking and reviewing next-generation sustainable housing technology and communicating that technology to global society.

In this 4th competition, a call was put out for proposals based on the theme of “Productive Garden — A Space for Enjoying Hokkaido with All Five Senses” on the site of Memu Meadows in the Taiki-cho in Hokkaido. In Taiki-cho, where activities synchronized with the workings of nature such as agriculture are carried out and diverse and rich foods including various harvests and dairy products are produced, the participants were asked to use this Landscape to draw up scenarios of how to taste nature and propose places where people would gather using all five senses.

The head of the jurors is globally active architect, Kengo Kuma. The three remaining members of the jury were Tomonari Yashiro, Professor of Institute of Industrial Science and Vice President of the University of Tokyo who also participated in the 3rd competition held last year, Isoya Shinji, Doctor of Agriculture and Landscape Architect, and Kundo Koyama, television, radio and script writer, who will perform the final.

The winning project will be selected from the three universities at the Open Final Screening held at the Keidanren Kaikan (Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo) on April 25, 2014. The university selected as the winner will construct the project on the site at Memu Meadows.

Outline of LIXIL International University Architectural Competition

The LIXIL International University Architectural Competition is a design competition hosted by LIXIL JS Foundation for university research laboratories.
Situated on a site in the Memu Meadows of Hokkaido’s Taiki-cho, we seek sustainable architectural solutions from nominative universities around the world.
The winning university will be responsible for the project throughout the construction phase.
