Staples, Inc. (NASDAQ: SPLS) today announced that Thomas Nowak, senior vice president, Merchandising for bol.com, one of Europe’s largest e-commerce sites, will join the Staples team as senior vice president of merchandising, Staples Europe, effective August 1, 2014. Mr. Nowak will report to President of Staples Europe John Wilson, and will be a member of the European leadership team.

“As part of our strategic transformation, we are making significant investments to expand our assortment and offer our customers more products than ever before,” Wilson said. “Thomas will play an integral part in our strategy, as his background and e-commerce experience will be critical in helping take us to the next level.”

As a member of the bol.com leadership team, Mr. Nowak led merchandising for this successful e-commerce business with notable average annual growth rates, and has also held positions at Samsung Electronics and Philips Consumer Electronics. He brings 15 years of business-to-business and business-to-consumer experience. Some of his recent notable achievements were introducing six new product categories for bol.com, and expanding the next day delivery capability to over one million items.

In his new role, Mr. Nowak will continue to evolve the company’s merchandising team and work with its vendor community to create the Staples of the future, with a focus on product category expansions and pricing strategy.
