10/01/2014 — MUMBAI, India — (BUSINESS WIRE)

CH2M HILL, a global full-service consulting, design, construction, and operations firm, congratulates GVK’s Mumbai International Pvt Ltd. (MIAL) on the inauguration of the industry-leading and state-of-the-art Terminal 2 (T2) at Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport.

The jewel of MIAL’s ambitious, extensive, and highly-successful airport modernisation program, T2 is already acknowledged to be one of the most iconic developments in recent times. Reflecting India’s diverse and rich heritage, the four-level integrated international terminal with an area of more than 439,000 square metres, sets new standards for architecture, planning, technology, functionality and service.

Among the many “firsts” for the new LEED India “Gold” rated terminal, designed by prime architect Skidmore, Owings & Merrill LLP and built by the prime constructor Larsen& Toubro, are:

  • 1,000 lotus-shaped imported chandeliers
  • 21,000 square metres of retail space, offering everything that money can buy
  • 5,000 square metres of landscape, with 80 different plant species and giant waterfalls.
  • 5,200 car parking area—India’s largest.
  • 50,000 square metres of check-in halls.
  • 188 airline check-in counters.
  • 11.6-metre airport escalator (the tallest in India), 72 lifts, 48 escalators and 40 travelators.
  • 92,903 square metres of glass in the all-glass terminal—a second layer of glass has been used to minimise noise.
  • 30,000 square metres of skylight — enough to cover Wimbledon’s Centre Court six times.
  • 50,000 square metres of roof space — equivalent to 10 football fields—built with 18,000 tonnes of structural steel that, experts say, is enough to build two Eiffel towers.
  • 52 boarding gates (increase from 20) with 10,900 seats.
  • 70 passenger boarding bridges (increased from 11) carrying passengers between the aircraft and terminal.
  • 185,000 square metres of granite — enough to cover 27 footballs fields.
  • 7,432 square metres of art walls with nearly 7000 artefacts, including delicately-carved doorways, decorative torans, terracotta horses, lamps, wooden temple chariots, masks, bows of snake boats, and mythical creatures.
  • 32 million to 40 million — increase in annual passenger handling capacity.
  • 450 metres distance from the last departure gate to the entry area — it’s 750 metres in Delhi.

CH2M HILL is providing programme management and technical consulting services for the $US2-billion modernisation programme. In addition to the flagship T2, Chhatrapati Shivaji’s capital projects, which the firm has supported, include modernising the existing domestic terminal; widening and strengthening the two main runways; constructing and rehabilitating taxiways and additional aprons; and improving airport facilities, including a new air traffic control tower.

With the reconstruction of the airside and terminal infrastructure, and the ability to support larger aircraft like the Airbus A380, the Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport takes its place as one of the most modern and technically advanced airports in the world. It is truly the pride of Mumbai and the new Gateway of India.
